unilayer cloud
FAQ

Questions and answers.

What is unilayer?

unilayer is an open source backend layer: it puts your data, files and users behind one API, over REST and GraphQL. You define collections at runtime, upload and transform files, and manage permissions – without writing a backend.

unilayer Cloud runs unilayer for you. The software is the same you could run yourself.

Why not run it myself?

You can – unilayer is open source. A cluster that survives a failing machine needs several machines, replicated volumes, object storage, certificates, backups and someone who keeps an eye on all of it. That is what you book here.

What happens when a node fails?

Nothing you notice: the other nodes still have the majority Raft needs and go on answering. A cluster of three nodes survives one failing node, one of five survives two. The missing node starts again on another machine.

A development instance has one node and no failover – it is meant for building, not for production.

How do backups work?

Every instance is backed up daily, and the backups are kept as long as its plan says. You can make a backup at any time, download it, restore it into a new instance, or reset the instance to it.

Can I change the plan later?

Yes, in the portal: a larger or smaller plan, another storage package, another unilayer version. A development instance becomes a cluster with "Upgrade to cluster". A smaller storage package is only possible while your files fit into it.

How am I billed?

By the day: an instance costs from the day it is booked until the day it is deleted, at the monthly price of its plan and storage package. You get one invoice per month and pay it online with the method you saved – or by bank transfer on request.

All prices are net. Customers in the EU pay the VAT of their country; businesses elsewhere in the EU with a valid VAT ID pay none (reverse charge), and neither do customers outside the EU.

I already run unilayer. Can I move in?

Yes. In the portal, start a migration, dump your database with pg_dump and upload it with the command the portal shows. Your new instance starts from that dump. If you like, it also fetches your files from the old instance, with an API token you give it.

Where is my data?

In the region you choose when you book – the instance, its backups and its files. The regions are listed on the pricing page.

We process what your instance stores only on your behalf; the data processing agreement is part of the contract.

What happens when I delete an instance?

A last backup is taken, then the instance and its volumes are removed and it is no longer billed. The last backup and the files are kept for 30 days, so a mistake can still be undone on request – after that they are deleted for good.
